3D Movies

"Jake Sully, this 3D movie is giving me a headache."
"Outstanding."

I don't like 3D movies. At all. I liked Avatar better in 2D. 3D hurts my eyes, gives me a headache and costs me more for an experience I enjoy much less. I liked Rango in part because it looked great in lovely 2D. I'm partially dreading this summer. The overwhelming majority of tent pole films being released are being released in 3D. Normally, these would be the films I look forward to the most, but this year I'm finding it hard to get excited. I see a trailer that I really like, like those for Transformers: Dark of the Moon, and find myself depressed by the end of the short video because I discovered that the film is in 3D. A year ago, most theaters would give you a choice to see the film in 2D or 3D. That option has been absent from the recently released major 3D films playing in the major theaters near my home.

I generally like to see films perform well. It saddens me to see most films under perform or even bomb because I know that even the worst films had a team of people working hard to bring them to fruition. I'm even just glad to see people going to the movies because in today's media saturated world, it's nice to see people choosing the movie theater over TV, the internet, etcetera. I'm starting to feel differently this year. I want to see major 3D tent poles under perform. I want to see some of them tank hard. Perhaps if that happens, it will cause an end to the trend of Hollywood churning out 3D movies simply because it means more revenue.

For the time being, however, I've found a small theater about a half an hour away from my home that shows films second-run but in 2D. I urge anyone who reads this to do the same. Find an encore theater that plays only 2D movies. Wait a month or two to see the biggest films. Enjoy them the way films were meant to be viewed: in glorious, vibrant 2D.
