Sidney Lumet has Passed Away

Acclaimed director Sidney Lumet has passed away. He died this morning from lymphoma at the age of 86. Lumet is widely recognized as one of the greatest directors in cinema, having directed such classics as 12 Angry Men, Network and Dog Day Afternoon, among others. His last film was 2007's Before the Devil Knows You're Dead. Although his film have been nominated for Academy Awards many times, he never won an Oscar. In 2005, he was given an honorary Oscar. He was one of the finest filmmakers to have graced the world of cinema and he will be greatly missed.

  1. I just watched The Pawnbroker for the first time yesterday. I didn't know he had passed. I'm stunned that he never won an oscar. I think he was nothing less than brilliant. -JustPassingTime

  2. I remember my first time watching 12 Angry Men. I was just floored by the film's power. I haven't seen all his films, but of those that I have seen, 12 Angry Men is my favorite. There's probably a good argument for it being his best as well. Anyway, the fact that he didn't win an Oscar just goes to show you that while it's not a bad thing to win one of those guys, it has no impact on defining a film's or a filmmaker's importance in the history of cinema.
